Perhaps you’re wondering what it is like to work at abrdn Financial Fairness Trust? Our team works in different parts of the country, within reach of London and Edinburgh offices, with much remote working. I spoke to various members of our team, and have pulled their reflections together below, about what it’s like to work at the Trust, to help you weigh up whether it could feel like a fit.

Whatever their role, each staff member is strongly behind what the Trust aims to do: to improve living standards and personal finance for people on low-to-middle incomes in the UK.  The Trust could be the right place if you are significantly interested in the links between living standards and social justice.

We’re a very small team. One staff member describes us as “knitted together”. Staff are interdependent: everyone’s role and expertise are valued. We are less siloed by function than can sometimes be the case in larger organisations, and it is satisfying to combine our skills.  Despite physical distances, working relationships are viewed as warm, approachable, interesting and generous in terms of time and thought.

The team works hard, with an expectation of high-quality work and satisfaction taken in producing it. Some reflected that there can be certain periods where work is intense. However, in getting the job done, there is significant consideration for working style and flexible patterns, as well as people’s circumstances and personal lives.

Our culture encourages policy discussion, debate and critical thinking. Asking questions and candour is valued. Everyone’s thoughts and input are welcomed and considered, and we enjoy learning from each other.  Team members work on the basis of presuming good intentions from others.  Staff  - alongside our trustees, who are important and active in our grant-making and other activities - act with respect.

Staff mention being reassured during their recruitment process about awareness and guidance about neurodivergence, and that this was supported once in post. Others highlight negotiated flexibility and adjustments in light of longer-term health conditions or at particular life-course moments.

Everyone experiences their workplace differently, but we hope these varied reflections go some way to convey our working lives at the Trust. If appeals to you, we look forward to your application when the right role comes up.
